Generally speaking, high-low designer collaborations have seen better days. They were all the rage for a while – Lanvin x H&M, anyone? – but at some point, they jumped the shark. I’m not sure whether that moment was the Missoni x Target online ordering fiasco or the Neiman Marcus x Target x Every Designer In America three-way flop, but it happened, and ever since then, our expectations have been low, if not nonexistent. 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target is here to restore some of our faith in high-low.

Most collaborations focus on clothing, which is easier to reasonably replicate for a fraction of the original price, but Lim went all-in on a capsule collection of inexpensive bags for both women and men as well. Some of the bags are faux-leather reinterpretations of Lim hits, most notably the Pashli, but there are also some new shapes, including an orange-and-purple leopard tote that’s the star of the accessories collection and a handsome blue camouflage backpack for men. Some fans will probably be mad at the Pashli spin-offs, but it’s exactly the type of bag that Target would imitate anyway, so Lim might as well get some of the credit (and revenue) for those cheaper versions.

Check out the entire bag collection for both men and women below; these pieces will reportedly retail for between $20 and $50 when the collection goes on sale at Target stores September 15.

This Little Loewe Panda Might be the Cutest Coin Purse Ever

Categories:Other Brands

Loewe-Panda-Coin-Purse

A lot of people have a particular type of animal on which they obsess. For me, it’s bulldogs – I prefer English, but a Frenchie will do in a pinch. I’ll cross the street and chase someone down in order to pet their bulldog, even if there’s oncoming traffic. For our operations director Shannon, it’s pandas. She may not have as many opportunities to pet random pandas on the way to the grocery store, her love for the lovable bears is still strong. She already has a panda case for her iPhone, and I think she should add this Loewe Panda Coin Purse to her collection next.

Adorableness usually isn’t a quality that I seek out in my leather goods and accessories, but when executed correctly, it’s incredibly hard for even me to resist some serious cuteness. Gucci has had a monopoly on animal-themed luxury coin purses (which are maybe even a whole genre unto themselves now) for the recent past, but this Loewe piece is not only seriously cute, but it’s a slightly uncharacteristic bit of humor for a brand that’s generally quite staid and maybe even a bit conservative.

Fashion can always use more humor, more recognition that perhaps not everyone in the industry is as self-serious as we often get the reputation for being, as long as we don’t lose the luxury along the way. This little panda is a perfect example of executing that combination beautifully. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $265.

Miley Cyrus Continues to Show Some Love to Her Chanel Bags

Categories:Other Brands

Arrivals at the Los Angeles Premiere of 'Paranoia'

Miley Cyrus continues to express her undying love for leather attire and Chanel bags…and her fiance, I guess. Here she is attending the Paranoia movie premiere with a chic, black and white Chanel Boy Bag on one arm, and Liam Hemsworth on the other. (Yes, they’re still a thing!) Miley’s been repping for Chanel almost exclusively this summer (in the bag department, at least). We spotted her with her Chanel backpack just a few weeks ago in NYC, and at a separate event in LA. She’s been a fan of Chanel since her Hannah Montana days, and we’ve got plenty of proof in “The Many Bags of Miley Cyrus.”

Miley also went on a little shopping spree circa mid-July at Chanel’s London store that garnered a fair amount of media attention. But if you’re a 20 year old zillionaire, I’m pretty sure it’s your MO in life to clean out a Chanel boutique on any given day of the week. Otherwise, what are you doing, really? Besides churning out the occasional summer pop music anthem?

Olivia Wilde Supports Her Fiancé While Carrying a Christian Louboutin Tote

Categories:Other Brands

Olivia-Wilde-Christian-Louboutin-Panettone-Spiked-Shopper-Tote-Bag

I’ve long been a proponent of Christian Louboutin’s small but underrated bag line. Louboutin’s bags have many of the same charms of his shoes – edgy detailing, that signature pop of red – and unlike his shoes, there’s no prospect of physical pain after the first hour! That being said, you probably wouldn’t want to trip down a flight of stairs with Olivia Wilde’s mixed metal Christian Louboutin Panettone Spiked Shopper Tote. You can claim this Panettone as your own for $2,395 at Neiman Marcus.

Olivia recently carried this tote to a taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live – her fiance Jason Sudeikis was the featured guest. We’ve seen many a celeb carrying Louboutin’s Sweet Charity bags, which come in a rainbow of colors, patterns, and leathers (there’s even a spiked version!), but this CL bag is fairly new on the scene. In fact, the Panettone Shopper was just introduced in Louboutin’s Fall 2013 collection. What’s your take on the Panettone, PB readers?

Sophia Bush Does Actress-in-LA Things with a Balenciaga Bag

Categories:Other Brands

Sophia-Bush-Balenciaga-City-Bag

Here’s Sophia Bush, playing the part of “quintessential LA actress” – drinking a grande green tea and heading to the gym with her pricey designer handbag in tow. In this case, her gym bag of choice is the ever-popular, buttery lambskin Balenciaga City Bag. You’ll notice she has the much-coveted apple green version! If you share Sophia’s passion for fruity hues, you can get a City Bag in “Rouge Cardinal” for $1,545 at Neiman Marcus.

You know Sophia, of course, from the epic WB/CW sudser One Tree Hill, which was finally canceled in 2012 after an illustrious 9 season run. Sophia immediately jumped to a new CBS sitcom called Partners, but that was unfortunately canned after just half a season last fall. There’s no word on her next project just yet, but I’m betting if she continues to keep it tight, the cards will fall in her favor.

Balenciaga Jumps on the Flared Gusset Bandwagon

Categories:Other Brands

Balenciaga-Papier-Ledger-Zip-Around-Tote

In general, it doesn’t bother me that so many designers have been “inspired” by Celine to adjust the gusset structure on some of their new bags. When a silhouette becomes so widely adored and connects so strongly with high-end customers, other brands would be silly not to explore whether it would be worth implementing in their own designs. At a certain point, designers aren’t copying an idea but designing for a widespread trend. It can also pay dividends to let a trend pass you by, though, and I wish that Balenciaga had done just that.

Manolo Blahnik is perhaps the best recent example of when its paid dividends for a brand to pass up a wide-reaching trend. Blahnik famously denounced the aesthetic value of platforms, and he refused to incorporate them into his shoes, even while designers like Christian Louboutin and Brian Atwood were getting rich on their sky-high shoes. Blahnik went forth doing what he did and weather his turn of relative unpopularity with grace. When fashion inevitably swung back in his direction and away from chunky platforms, Blahnik picked up where he left off with a product that many other lines were ill-prepared to rival during the first days of the trend, and his version of the single-sole pump is still prized among shoe lovers.

With the Balenciaga Papier Zip Around Totes, we have a brand that’s taken the exact opposite approach. Balenciaga’s Motorcycle Bags are iconic; they’ve endured the It Bag era with more grace and success than basically any of their contemporaries, and they still sell well and look current. They just don’t look trendy – they’re not structured, minimal or particularly petite. And that’s ok. The market needs choices, and it needs handbags that don’t necessarily fit the popular wisdom of what a bag should look like right this second, because that popular wisdom is always changing.

Evolution is important in design, of course, but I would have preferred something more creative than simply putting a popular gusset style on an existing bag. For the price of a Balenciaga design, customers should expect a little more creativity. The Papier bags were a nice evolution on the Motorcycle style, and I’m sure that there are other avenues that can be taken to explore the Motorcycle aesthetic further. I’m pretty sure that none of those avenues lead to the Celine design studio.
